Brain Donation

We are proud to partner with Autism BrainNet, an organization that promotes innovative, high-quality research on postmortem (Popup Definition: "Post-mortem" is a term used to talk about things that happen or are done after a person or animal has died) brain tissue with the goal of improving the understanding of the biological causes of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and related neurodevelopmental conditions.

Autism BrainNet makes the process of brain donation as simple as possible for every family. Donor families are treated with respect and compassion and are provided with ongoing support. Pre-registration is not required to become a donor however, long-term planning can make the donation process easier.

Why consider brain donation to Autism BrainNet?

  • Autism BrainNet works with scientists across the globe to advance research into the causes of autism and related neurodevelopmental disorders. Research using postmortem brain tissue provides one of the most direct ways to understand the biological causes of ASD and identify potential therapeutic targets in the brain.
  • Brain donation is not part of most organ donation registries and Autism BrainNet makes sure that brain samples are stored and accessible to advance research.
  • There is no cost to the family associated with postmortem brain donation.
  • The data generated will be shared to enable the development of treatments that improve the quality of life of individuals who are affected by them.
  • See how donation can impact research in the graphic below.

Autism BrainNet is advancing research through the gift of brain donation.

They highlight how one phone call advances autism research through 5 steps:

It all starts with a donation call to Autism BrainNet 877-333-0999.

Transport

The brain donation is transported to one of Autism BrainNet’s repositories, where it is preserved and stored.

Research

A single brain donation helps facilitate many research studies for decades to come.

Contribute

The results can contribute to the development of new treatments.

Improve

New treatments could improve the quality of life of individuals with autism and related neurodevelopmental conditions.
